BEST OF THE UNDERGROUND FILMS THAT HAVE BECOME CULT CLASSICS – FROM ‘THE ROOM’ (2003) TO WORLDWIDE THUMB WRESTLING

WTF: WORLDWIDE THUMBWRESTLING FEDERATION // TRICOAST ENTERTAINMENT
Tommy Wiseau makes his jump into the Hollywood spotlight with James Franco’s ‘Disaster Artist’ (2017) – based on Wiseau’s famous underground turned cult-classic film, ‘The Room’ (2003).

Los Angeles, CA – January 25, 2018 –

Awards season highlights the underground turned cult-classic films.

In the midst of awards season, ‘The Disaster Artist’ Producer, Director and Lead Actor, James Franco has stolen victories in ‘Best Actor – Musical or Comedy’ at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role’ at the 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards.

‘The Disaster Artist’ is a comedy-drama based on Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’ (2003) with Greg Sestero, known as cult film for being one of the world’s worst films. Franco’s adaptation features Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie and Josh Hutcherson.

Similar to Wiseau’s, both films are bizarre, make very little sense and seemingly warrants nothing deeming it a “quality” film, yet, movies like ‘The Room’ have become cult-classic favorites as rare, underground sensations.

If you enjoyed Franco’s ‘Disaster Artist’ (2017) or Wiseau’s ‘The Room’ (2003), here’s your guide to “Best of The Underground Films That Have Become Cult Classics”:

1. ‘Sharknado’ (2013) – Directed by Anthony C. Ferrante

When Los Angeles turned into a shark-infested city eating its inhabitants (Tara Reid, ‘American Pie’ and Ian Ziering, ‘Beverly Hills 90210’), the ridiculousness spawned four sequels, making ‘Sharknado’ a rare gem in the collection of Hollywood’s favorite cult classics.

2. ‘WTF: Worldwide Thumbwrestling Federation’ (2017) – Directed by Enrico Natale

‘WTF’ is a ridiculous, mockumentary that documents the Brussel brothers’ journey to defeat the evil Mr. Venom and revive the sport of thumb wrestling. The competitive sport is put to the test at the annual “Thumble Rumble”, where the brothers hope that their secret weapon, the youngest Brussel, will overcome his competition and restore the family legacy.

3. ‘Troll 2’ (1990) – Directed by Claudio Fragasso as Drake Floyd

Nothing like the horror film ‘Troll’ (1986), ‘Troll 2’ uses the terrifying monsters, who are seemingly vegetarian, to kill families and turn them into plants for food. With a ridiculous plot, the film shines as a rare, underground sensation. Star from the film, Michael Stephenson, made a documentary noting the surprise success and production of ‘Troll 2’.

4. ‘Birdemic: Shock and Terror’ (2010) – Directed by James Nguyen

A not-so-rare cult classic noted for its similarity to Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’ (2003), James Nguyen performs a self-styled, seemingly lacking of funding and talent, confusing version of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ (1963). Nguyen’s film is also recognized for its special effects as the birds are deemed “the worst-looking animal assailants ever produced”.

From birds to thumb wrestling, these cult classics contain the ridiculousness, eccentric and silliness that continue to suck-in moviegoers as the initial and seemingly disastrous work is now highlighted as rare movie gems and underground film sensations.

Wiseau found success 15 years after ‘The Room’ was released, as he’s appeared at several award shows including the 75th Golden Globe Awards thriving off his later success of his passion-project.

Which film will find future success next?

Director Enrico Natale has produced several award winning films at film festivals such as Manhattan Film Festival (2016), Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (2016) and Los Angeles Film and Script Festival (2012).

WTF’s all-star cast includes Debra Wilson (“MADtv”, ”Avatar”), Keith Habersberger (“Buzzfeed’s Try Guys”), Eddie Jemison (“Oceans 11,12,13”), Samm Levine (“Freaks and Geeks”), Kash Hovey (“Another Blackout”), Daniel Lugan (“Mayans MC”) and WWE Superstar, John Hennigan.
